Final year thesis: a critical analysis of the gendered representations of the state of Iran

Grade: 78%

Abstract

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the ways the Iranian state is critically represented through a gendered and artistic perspective from Iranian female artists since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. It explores the explanatory, depictive, narrative and controversial dimensions of visual arts that represent the state, question it, denounce it and engage in it around themes of politics, religion, identity and society through the lens of Iranian female artists in the repressive regime of Iran. It is through the intersections of the political, religious, social and personal spheres that both their lives and views of the state as well as their artworks are highly impacted.

This research aims to demonstrate the ways Iranian female artists exercise an effective agency and perform change and resistance to the State of Iran through their artistic and feminine representations.
